Flowers at Alum Rock Park, June 2011

 

Checkerspot Butterfly on Buckeye Tree
Alum Rock Park a couple days ago I found lots of flowers in bloom including Clarkia, Buckeye tree blooms Golden Yarrow. 

The buckeye trees had lots of Checkerspot Butterflies, feasting on the nectar

One way to explore the photos is to pick a place to explore. This section will suggest some favorite locations and give directions for getting there. With any luck, the sections will be timely.

Joseph Grant Park


Where

Grant Ranch is a Santa Clara county park located 10 miles up Mt. Hamilton Rd from Alum Rock Ave in East San Jose.

Why

  •  It's a fine place to see spring wild flowers. Mt Hamilton has some wildflowers that grow no where else.
  •  Lots of trails for mountain bike riding.

When
Best in the spring before it gets too hot. better wildflowers too.

Coyote Hills

Where

    Just north of the Dunbarton Bridge lies Coyote Hills park.
     

Why

  • A huge array of birds including herons, pelicans and hawks.
  • A butterfly garden that hosts lots of monarch butterflies in season.
  • Great bay views.

Lake Cunninghan Park

Where

  • a city park on the east side of San Jose.

Why

  • It has several small islands where you can watch birds nseting in the spring.
  • There is a California Native Plants garden that is being created by the local CNPS ( California Native Plant Society) chapter.
  • Home of Raging Waters, a water slide based  amusement park.
  • You can rent and sail small sailboats on the lake
